今週は日月祝休み、通常営業予定です。

今日ご紹介するのは芳年「大日本名将鑑」より源頼光とその配下の四天王によって倒されたという酒呑童子の図。
ただいま画廊に展示中の作品です。是非ご覧ください。

Fourth week of July, business days.We will be open as usual this week.

Today, we would like to introduce a work from “Dai Nihon Meisho Kagami” by Yoshitoshi, featuring a figure of Shuten Doji, who is said to have been defeated by Minamoto no Yorimitsu and his subordinate Shitenno (the Four Devas).

It is on display at the gallery. You are welcome to take a look at it.

Kuniyoshi / One Hundred Poems by One Poet Each / Monk Nouin, 1843.　

Ukiyo-e’s depiction of rain is said to have amazed Westerners. This looks like quite a downpour.

今週ご紹介するのは 国芳「伊達模様血氣競 野晒五助 」

図としては「国芳もやう正札附現金男　野晒悟助」が有名ですが、大体同時期に描かれたもの。元坊主の葬儀屋、髑髏を着こなす伊達男！

This week we will introduce Nozarashi Gosuke, from the series Contest of Hot-blooded Heroes in Bold Patterns (Date moyô kekki kurabe) by Kuniyoshi.More famous Ukiyoe is “Men of Ready Money with True Labels Attached, Kuniyoshi Fashion / Nozarashi Gosuke” drawn at about the same time.

Once a monk, now a mortician, this guy is a Date man in a skull pattern!

「源平盛衰記　一　文覚上人 」(1885)

那智の滝にて荒行中、二度死にかけながらも不動明王の遣いに助けられた…と本人が言っただけなのかどうか。文覚の生命力の強さよ。

This week’s article is based on the Ukiyoe series”Genpei Seisuiki I: Mongaku Shonin” (1885) by Chikanobu.

He was saved by the messenger of Fudo-myo-o while he almost died twice during his asceticism at Nachi Falls… …is this a lie or a true story? Whichever the case may be, this episode shows the strength of Mongaku’s life force.

「大日本名将鑑　右大将 源頼朝」明治13年(1880)

由比ヶ浜で鶴を放つ放生会（ほうじょうえ）の図。悲願を果たすためなんとしても生き延びたいという頼朝の心持ちは切ないほど。

This week, we will be reading “The 13 Lords of the Shogun” by Yoshitoshi.

Dainippon Meisho Kagami, Shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo, 1880(13th year of Meiji)

A scene from the Houjoe, a ceremony in which cranes are released at Yuhigahama beach.
Yoritomo’s heart is filled with sadness, as he wants to survive at all costs in order to fulfill the long-cherished wish of the Minamoto clan.

ご紹介するのは貞廣の役者絵

黒の背景と色使いが格好良いです。

Did you know that Ukiyo-e also has a Kamigata (upper part of Japan) style? These Ukiyoe were created in Osaka, not Edo.

Introduced here is Sadahiro’s “Arashi Rikan,” a portrait of a KABUKI actor, circa Tempo (c. 1840).

The black background and colors are very cool.
