清親「鹿児嶋英雄伝 桐野利秋」明治10 年(1877)
明治の浮世絵は海外から伝わってきた鮮やかな赤の染料が特徴的。とても水に滲みやすいのでこの赤が綺麗に残っているかは重要なポイントです。

Kobayashi Kiyochika, famous for his Kousen-ga ( new landscape drawings called Kosenga in which profile lines weren’t used.), created a number of War-Ukiyoe pictures. War-Ukiyoe-pictures are also featured in our this year’s issue catalog.

Kiyochika “Navy Lieutenant Colonel Hirose Takeo”(1895)

Late Ukiyo-e’s one of its roles was to report the news. This genre of Ukiyo-e is known as war pictures. Generals in the pictures are depicted as if they were heroes. They are also valuable as period documents.

We will be open on June 20 (Thu) from 16:00-19:00 and closed on Sunday, Monday, and national holidays.

At the end of the glory days of Ukiyo-e, it served as a “nishiki-e newspaper” reporting to the masses who could only read hiragana. Among the “war pictures,” this one is a very rare picture depicting an impossible hand-to-hand battle in the sea.

This is a rare work, a war ukiyoe by a Japanese painter　YASUDA YUKIHIKO, which is currently featured in our catalog. Excellent as a woodblock print and as a picture.
