清親「鹿児嶋英雄伝 桐野利秋」明治10 年(1877)
明治の浮世絵は海外から伝わってきた鮮やかな赤の染料が特徴的。とても水に滲みやすいのでこの赤が綺麗に残っているかは重要なポイントです。

Ukiyoe of the Meiji period is characterized by the bright red dye introduced from overseas. It is important to ensure that this red remains beautiful because it is very easy to bleed through water.

Kintoki Sakata = Kintaro, who served Minamoto no Yorimitsu and became one of the Four Heavenly Kings, his mother, and Yamamba of Mount Ashigara. It may be rare that so many figures from childhood to adulthood appear in Ukiyoe.

Kobayashi Kiyochika, famous for his Kousen-ga ( new landscape drawings called Kosenga in which profile lines weren’t used.), created a number of War-Ukiyoe pictures. War-Ukiyoe-pictures are also featured in our this year’s issue catalog.

Kiyochika “Navy Lieutenant Colonel Hirose Takeo”(1895)

Late Ukiyo-e’s one of its roles was to report the news. This genre of Ukiyo-e is known as war pictures. Generals in the pictures are depicted as if they were heroes. They are also valuable as period documents.

栄華を極めた浮世絵の末期は、平仮名しか読めない大衆に向けた「錦絵新聞」の報道としての役割でした。「戦争絵」の中でもこちらはとても珍しい海の中のありえない白兵戦を描いた絵。

We will be open on June 20 (Thu) from 16:00-19:00 and closed on Sunday, Monday, and national holidays.

At the end of the glory days of Ukiyo-e, it served as a “nishiki-e newspaper” reporting to the masses who could only read hiragana. Among the “war pictures,” this one is a very rare picture depicting an impossible hand-to-hand battle in the sea.

In the third week of June, we will be open only on 6/12 (Wed.) and 6/14 (Fri.) due to a business trip and an attendance at a conference.

This is a rare work, a war ukiyoe by a Japanese painter　YASUDA YUKIHIKO, which is currently featured in our catalog. Excellent as a woodblock print and as a picture.

「冨嶽三十六景 東海道吉田」天保頃(c1832)　北斎

不二（富士)見茶屋の様子が描かれています。カメラもないので目で直に楽しみ、お土産の浮世絵でその様子を思い返す。なんとも風流ですよね。

Fugaku Sanjurokkei Tokaido Yoshida (Thirty-six views of Mt. Fugaku), ca. Tempo (c1832)　Hokusai

The scene of Fuji teahouse is depicted in this Ukiyoe. Of course, there were no cameras, so people of the time enjoyed the scene directly with their eyes and recalled the scene in the souvenir Ukiyoe. It is very elegant, isn’t it?
